Greenman (23)
A Green Man is a sculpture, drawing, or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the nose, mouth, nostrils or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found on carvings in churches and other buildings (both secular and ecclesiastical). "The Green Man" is also a popular name for English public houses and various interpretations of the name appear on inn signs, which sometimes show a full figure rather than just the head. The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or "renaissance," representing the cycle of growth each spring. Some[who?] speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history. -

Sketchbook Project 2010 (42)
Sketchbook Project Tour 2010 (www.thesketchbookproject.com) is a themed project (I picked "The Secret Code") through the Art Coop, NYC. This open project is for artists to submit themed sketchbook by January 2011, to travel as a group show throughout the United States and finally reside at the Art Library of Brooklyn. At that point, these sketchbooks will be part of a lending library for others to review and take out of the collection. There is a website along with a personal UPC code that goes along with the book for viewers and artists to communicate about the work, the thinking, the process. I started my sketchbook 10/13/2010 and plan on having it completed by 10/23/2010. I will post the sketches (which I have limited to colored sharpies and limited palette of prismacolors) in the order of the book for your entertainment. -
